🥚🐔 WHY DO SOME EGGS HAVE SOFT OR THIN SHELLS? Have you ever cracked an egg and noticed the shell is unusually thin or even soft? There’s actually some interesting science behind it! 🔬 An eggshell is made mostly of calcium carbonate, and the hen needs to absorb and use calcium to build that strong shell. A few things can affect shell quality: ☀️ Heat stress – Hot weather can affect the hen’s calcium metabolism and the carbonate needed to form the shell. 🌾 Nutrition – Calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D₃ all work together to support healthy shell formation. 🐔 Age of the hen – Young hens can sometimes produce weaker shells, while shell quality can naturally decline as hens get older. 🥚 High production – Producing an egg is a big job! Hens need a constant supply of nutrients to keep up with shell production. So, a soft-shelled egg isn’t always simply a case of “not enough calcium” — nutrition, weather, age, stress and the hen’s overall health can all play a part. If you have been coming to our little gem in Horsley Park for many years, you may remember this beautiful woman. Our grandmother, Rose, who alongside her husband, Charlie, started this legacy we continue to build upon. She is now looking down at us alongside Charlie and their daughter, Marion.
